Workshop and Cultural and Sportive activities organised
in “Nuci Naci” and “Ismail Qemali” schools in Korca

As planned, the two days Workshop and cultural and sportive activities were organised in both schools in Korca, on 3 and 4 May 2013.

39 participants, teachers, pupils and parents, monitoring groups’ members, headmasters from both selected schools, took part in the Workshop.

Chairman of FSASH, Xhafer Dobrushi, Head of Organising Department of SPASH, Nevrus Kaptelli, as well as Head of SPASH Korca Section, Albina Pepo, and Head of FSASH Korca Section, Rajmonda Grabocka, also attended the Workshop and all other activities.

The Workshop was organised in three different sessions.

First Session, was focused on theoretical training and explanations.

The Former National Manager of ILO-IPEC Office in Tirana, already closed by ILO, Etleva Vertopi, made a wide presentation on:

  1. International standards and national legislation on prevention and elimination of child labour, good practices and lessons learned in prevention and elimination of child labour in Albania.
  2. SCREAM package - “Supporting Children’s Rights through Education, Arts and Media”: how can teachers and trade union leaders raise awareness of children against child labour and how teachers can use SCREAM in their daily work.
  3. Non-Formal Education Manual, teaching methodology and learner-centered approach, learning styles, learner attributes and the related teaching approaches.

Explanations were accompanied with concrete exercises regarding different modules with interactive participation of teachers, pupils and parents present in the Workshop.
Theoretical explanations were followed by concrete discussions about the situation in participating schools and wider.

During the Second Session, the Project Coordinator, Stavri Liko, made a special presentation on the Brochure “Elimination of Child Labour, an Important Trade Union Issue”, being focused especially on the Guidelines and practical information about education trade unions and teachers’ commitment in child labour prevention and elimination.
He mentioned the obligation of school based trade unions to mobilize teachers dealing with keeping children in school and collaborate with other stakeholders in their commitment to prevent and eliminate child labour.

Discussions in this session were really concrete, based on concrete experience they are gaining in the process of Project implementation.

Third Session was focused on concrete situation of Project implementation.

Heads of Monitoring Groups, Thomaq Ninka, (“Ismail Qemali” school) and Sonela Mano, (“Nuci Naci” school),  held detailed reports on work done, problems faced, progress done and duties to be followed in Project implementation and beyond.
Concrete discussions were made, on actual situation regarding school dropout and child labour prevention and elimination, being focused especially on project objectives for each Monitoring Groups and each pupils subject of Project activities.
Teachers Edlira Mitre, Altin Collaku, Irena Kocaqi, Adriana Mecollari, all responsible for monitoring groups in “Ismail Qemali” School, and teachers Bukurie Hyska, Mariana Cifligu, Besa Furxhi and Viktora Vllahu, responsible for monitoring groups in “Nuci Naci” school, spoke about the work done, the actual situation, mentioning individually pupils turned back in school, those who are out of risk to drop out from school and those who they are still working with to be returned to school.  

Based on the figures mentioned during these discussions, the actual situation is as follows:
 In “Ismail Qemali ” school:
Out of 18 pupils dropped out from school, 9 pupils are turned back in school, while the work is continuing with all other pupils remaining problem for this school year.
Evident progress is made regarding pupils at risk to drop out from school. Out of 110 at the beginning of Project implementation, 84 pupils were reported out of risk to drop out from school, attending it regularly and making progress in school performance.

In “Nuci Naci” school,
Out of 14 pupils dropped out from school, 10 pupils are turned back in school, while work is continuing with others.
Regarding pupils at risk to drop out from school, out of 65 at the beginning of Project implementation, in the Workshop were reported 48 pupils out of risk to drop out from school, attending it regularly and making progress in school performance.

“Ismail Qemali” school Headmaster, Ylli Kreka, appreciated the work done by teachers with individual pupils and their families, accepting that results are better in “Nuci Naci” school and this is an example how teachers can work better, also based on the experience of colleagues from “Nuci Naci” school.

Through many other discussions, including those from parents and pupils, this Workshop was, at the same time, an example how to share experience between both schools and among Monitoring Groups’ members, on working methods, approaches used, results achieved and so on.
Providing all detailed data about pupils dropped out or at risk to drop out from school, detailed plans and effective individual work with each of them, collaboration with school administration, pupils and parents, were some of the most important elements identified by participants who took the floor in this Workshop.

Through a concrete action plan approved during this session, it was agreed, that teachers, pupils and parents from both schools should continue the concrete work with pupils and their parents, aiming to bring them back in school within this school year.

Cultural and sportive activities were also organised on the 3rd of May, with participation of pupils subject of Project implementation, as well as their classmates from both schools.
More than 90 pupils took part in various cultural, artistic and sportive disciplines, including football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, singing, dancing, recitation, painting and so on.
All teachers engaged in Project implementation and especially teachers of physical education and music, were the organisers of these activities, also supported by their headmasters.
Some of the activities were organised in the form of competitions between two schools, announcing the winners by special commissions composed of teachers and pupils.

Pupils Pamela Muco, Anxhelo Latka, Gabriela Gjeloshani, Franceska Sadik, Xhorxhina Oranlli, Mario Kupe from “Ismail Qemali” school and Amina Xhafka, Sara Sylenji, Oljan Zyberi, Orenti Pajo, Aldo Xega, Daniel Selimi, Etleva Iftica, Franceska Xhambazi, Jonida Xhambazi, Brikena Kosturi, Stela Agolli etc, from “Nuci Naci” school, were among the best pupils participating in different cultural and sportive activities.

After the conclusions at the end of these activities, food packages were distributed to the respective parents from both schools, also present in all these activities, together with their children, who thanked AOb and FSASH/SPASH for this support and assistance.

Headmasters of schools, Ylli Kreka and Stavri Cano, also, on behalf of teachers and pupils participating in these activities, thanked AOb, Secondary Education, for this concrete support.
